Reducing My Type A Stress

For those that don’t know me, I am a classic textbook Type A person. I over schedule myself, am very concerned with being on time and can be a bit intense. All of these things can often cause me stress, if you can imagine. I have known for a while that as soon as I set a goal of any kind from planning a vacation to hiking 52 hikes in a year, I become extremely passionate and excited about. It nearly consumes my life for a while, until I learn how to find balance with each new “project”. For a little while now, my husband and I have been trying to conceive (TTC) and I have been a bit obsessed with it to say the least. I have been afraid to share this publicly, but decided it was time. Sharing usually helps me find that balance I need and also, I would rather live life as an open book!

Since the Type A personality induced stress of TTC has become too intense, I realized something needs to change. We haven’t been trying for years and everything is happening “normally,” but I am letting my head get the best of me. I need to remember I am more than a uterus and need to remember to still live my life to the fullest AND live in the moment. Also, stress isn’t helping the situation at all, as many have reminded me. I have decided to take the opportunity of a New Year to make a strong daily routine to enhance my self care, reduce stress and make more time for what makes me the happiest!

  • Daily Meditation
Yea, I know. Some of you may be saying, “Finally Samm!” while others are like, “What is up with this hippie chick?” Well, I am deciding to take at least 5 minutes every day to learn how to meditate and create space in my mind. With the goals of reducing stress, increasing happiness and focus, I am going to ease into this as I know my Type A personality is going to shine bright as I try not to “think” for 5 minutes. For some this may sound easy, but for me, it feels near impossible. However, I feel like the benefits are going to be more than worth it! I have been successfully taking the time to meditate since January 1st and am continuing to move forward with optimism. I will share, I thought I would do this every morning, yet it fits better into my day if I do it in the evening after yoga. I just started using the HeadSpace app and am amazed with how helpful it has been. Thank you to my Instagram family for suggested it!
  • Yoga
Now on to yoga! Before moving to our rural home, I regularly practiced at a studio and was amazed how incredible it made me feel. From aches and pains to mindfulness, I felt balanced in a deeper way. Not going to a studio means there is no longer a group of friends that will know if I don’t show up. Yet I need to learn how to show up for myself! No one else! Therefore, I am going to practice yoga daily at whatever time of day it fits in best for me. I started by doing a 30 day yoga challenge I found on Amazon Prime. It started slow, but I quickly realized by listening to my body that moving slowly back in is probably the best way to go.
  • Evening Gratitude Journal
Each night I am going to write in a gratitude journal to recognize my appreciation and remind myself all that I have to be thankful for. I also have high hopes that this will help me relax and slow my mind down before I attempt to sleep. It will help me move away from the past, be in the present and embrace the future. If I a miss a day, its ok! However, I will do my best to repeat this practice regularly until it becomes second nature. I have missed a few days over this first week and a half but every night I have fallen to sleep easier and woke up less. That alone is worth it all!
  • Introduce more Essential Oils and Herbs
I am not 100% sure what this looks like yet but I am removing artificial fragrances from my life, which I have been gradually doing for many years. I know a little about Peppermint, Lavender and Lemon but know there is more for me to learn. I have enlisted the help of a couple of friends and cannot wait to learn more about oils. I also started a Chakra and Essential Oils seven day challenge with Alisha Leytem and have already gotten super excited to explore both oils and chakras this year! As for herbs, I know which ones I love like Raspberry Leaf and Dandelion Root. I just want to make sure I am using them regularly and be open to adding more! Please share your suggestions with me.
  • Focus on my Food Freedom
For the past two years I have done a great job at learning more about how food uniquely impact my body. I am going to spend sometime refocusing on this and making it my priority to avoid the foods that cause inflammation and discomfort. With the help of my foodie community and my favorite program, Whole30, I know this can be the year I finally reach #foodfreedomforever! I started a new round of Whole30 on January 1st and am feeling AMAZING!

I would love to hear what you are focusing on in the New Year! Do you have any resolutions or aspirations? What are you most looking forward to in 2018? Also let me know of the ways you reduce stress is your daily life. I am eager to learn new strategies and find a balance. Happy New Year!
